The Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay visits Saransk

The Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay arrived on the 9 January in the Republic of Mordovia. A relay of 205 torchbearers covered 37.5 km on the streets of Saransk. Special train delivered the Lamp with the Olympic flame in the early afternoon to Saransk from Nizhny Novgorod, where the Relay city stage had ended the day before. After some welcoming words, the first Saransk torchbearer, 2004 Olympic champion, Honored Master of Sports for Greco-Roman Wrestling, Alexei Mishin, set off with the Flame on a journey through the streets of the capital of the Republic of Mordovia.

The city stage of the Sochi 2014 Relay was then run by famous Saransk walkers, winners of gold medals at Olympic Games, World and European championships, Sergei Kirdyapkin and Anisya Kirdyapkina, Elena Lashmanova, Irina Stankina. One of the torchbearers was Denis Nizhegorodov, the winner of a bronze Olympic medal at Beijing, multiple World Cup winner and Honored Master of Sports of Russia.

The University rejoiced at the delegacy of its Rector Sergey Vdovin to be one of the torchbearer. Happy students and teaching staff greeted the Rector and he in his turn thanked them admitting that he had been feeling rather feverish as if before the final race:

“The Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay is the special event for the whole city, the special event for the whole university! As a torchbearer I represent the several-thousand academic staff. My message to all staff and students is to be healthy because a true success is only in the hands of a healthy person!”

In the evening, the Olympic Relay returns to the city center, to Sovetskaya Square where the Olympic Cauldron will be lit with celebrations finalising this memorable day.
