Faculty of electronic engineering wins funding for a project supervised by a prominent international scholar

June 18, the Russian Science Foundation announced the results of the call under the category «Research in small groups supervised by leading Russian or foreign scientists». More than 300 research teams submitted their proposals of which the Board of experts selected 56 best.

The Faculty of Electronic Engineering headed by professor Igor V. Gulyaev has managed to win approval from one of the best, prominent scholars – professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering, the University of Oviedo, (Spain) - Fernando Briz del Blanco. Fernando Briz is author/co-author of over 100 journal papers in the field of electric drives and power conversion. He is currently a technical project manager of over 30 projects with public (European, national and regional) and industry funding. He is recipient of six IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE) prize paper awards and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications Prize Paper Awards.

The project to be implemented is entitled «Design of advanced control and modulation strategies for losses minimisation of AC drives». The grants are being allocated to conduct research in 2015–2017 with possible further extension of the project period by one or two years. During project implementation, a foreign scientist must reside in the Russian Federation for at least 183 days of each calendar year, and in 2015 – for at least half of the time from the date on which the agreement with the Foundation was signed. The size of a grant will range from 5 to 10 million roubles each year.

This historic win is really remarkable not only for the Faculty but also for the University as a whole as it occurred for the first time in its history. Sincere congratulations!
