Forum of the Volga-Yangtze Association of higher education institutions: prospects and achievements


End of October (22-23) went out with the 3rd online forum of the Volga-Yangtze Association of higher education institutions. The main topic of the event was the discussion of prospects and new opportunities for Russian-Chinese regional cooperation in the post-pandemic time.

This was also a side theme in the Rector’s talk, who shared with online audience the experience of cooperation between Ogarev Mordovia State University and Chinese universities in science and education.

As of today, Mordovia State University cooperates with 18 scientific and educational centers in China. This includes not only bilateral relations, but also participation in multilateral and consortium projects

Among major projects referred to a three-year project under the Erasmus+ program, action: Capacity building in higher education «Development of TRANS-regional information literacy for continuing education and the knowledge economy» was memtioned. Partners from China are Beijing Institute of Technology, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology.

The research group of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology is now working with scientists from China and India to implement the project «Manufacturing of three-dimensional multifunctional materials based on nanocellulose for use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine». Among partners are: Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University.

Academic mobility of teaching staff and students in both countries has gained a considerable momentum before COVID-19 pandemic. In partnership with Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, a joint educational program in the subject area «Heat power engineering and heat-process engineering » is taught in English. By this time 3 graduating classes of master degree students have already been released.

A great deal of attention is paid to cooperation in training research staff, expanding opportunities for learning Chinese in Mordovia, holding joint cultural events, and many more.

The potential for further cooperation with Chinese universities remains high. In addition to the above-mentioned areas, the University plans to participate in the events dedicated to the Years of Russian-Chinese scientific, technical and innovative cooperation in 2020-2021, as well as in the Roadmap of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the field of science, technology and innovation until 2025.

Practical implementation of new ideas and joint research in priority areas of science that are strategically important for both sides – biotechnology, agricultural engineering, linguistics and culture, etc. will be supported. 

At the same time, the key task is to employ the resource potential of the Association, which is a powerful tool for developing not only direct partnership, but also online networking, said Sergey M. Vdovin.

The Volga-Yangtze Association of higher education institutions was established in 2017 within the framework of the second meeting of the Council for Interregional Cooperation in the Volga-Yangtze format. Now it unites 51 Russian and 30 Chinese universities.
