Political science scholars of Mordovia State University cement a relationship with the Republic of Belarus

The Republic of Belarus is a friendly state with which Russia has many areas for cooperation. One of them is science. For many years, it has been successfully carried out by scholars of the Chair of World History, Political Science and Regional Studies of Mordovia State University. We have accumulated some good experience, says Doctor (Higher doctorate) of Political Sciences Olga V. Bakhlova.

"The Belarusian subject matter has always aroused my interest. The key topic of my research was political mechanisms and technologies of Russian-Belarusian integration. In 2007 I defended my postdoctoral dissertation on this topic. In recent years, when the international situation has changed significantly, research topics are even more urgent and in abundance".

Many of them proved instrumental in getting grant support, in particular, projects funded by RFH (Russian Foundation for Humanities) "Integration policy of Russia as a factor in formation and implementation of the national development strategy" (2016-2017) and RFBR "Spatial development of Russia as a factor in nation-building and the formulation of the national idea" (2018-2020). Scholars keep saying that by now strong relationships have been established with leading research institutions, such as the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR) – the main analytical facility in the Republic of Belarus, positioning itself as a "think-tank".

It is planned to sign an agreement between Mordovia State University and BISR. Scholars assure that there are enough areas for cooperation. Topics of mutual interest are related to interregional cooperation, joint counteraction to challenges and threats to international and national security, issues of youth policy, political participation, etc. "This subject matter is relevant not only at the level of Republic of Mordovia, but also at the level of Russia," the university's scholars emphasize.

Tools to shape and forge relations with colleagues from Belarus are conferences, round tables, workshops which are regularly attended by political science scholars of our university. Owing to such formats, during only the last four years we have managed to strengthen cooperation with Belarusian State University, the Academy of Management under the President of the Republic of Belarus. A separate direction is cooperation with regional universities such as Masherov Vitebsk State University, Kuleshov Mogilev State University, Polessky State University, etc.

Co-operation between universities and scientific organizations is also reinforced by attracting well-known scholars to the editorial boards of scholarly journals. Thus, in 2017, Head of the Chair of International Relations of the Academy of Management under the President of the Republic of Belarus, Deputy Head of the Foreign Policy Section of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Union Parliament, Doctor of Political Science Sergey A. Kizima joined the editorial board of the journal "Regionology".

The problems of multidimensional Russian-Belarusian cooperation resonate with the Chair’s postgraduate students. Olga Bakhlova explains that in the near future, one of her PhD student A.N. Gorskaya is scheduled to defend her PhD thesis titled "The political elites of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus in the system of interregional and cross-border interaction". To prepare this work, a young researcher conducted a large-scale expert survey with the participation of Belarusian colleagues from 5 universities.

In view of the aforesaid this means that cooperation continues, and the scientific contacts between Ogarev Mordovia State University and the Republic of Belarus will wax in size and strength.
