Introduction

The learning of civil engineers in the Republic of Mordovia began in 1957, when, alongside with the opening of the Mordovia State University, Engineering-Technical Faculty was established, which included the Division of Industrial and Civil Engineering. In 1962, the first graduation of civil engineers took place and in the same year the Faculty of Construction Engineering sprang into action.

In 2022 the Faculty of Architecture and Construction Engineering was renamed into the Institute of Architecture and Construction Engineering.

The teaching is realised by highly qualified teaching staff. 90% of the faculty have various academic degrees and titles.

Resources and facilities

Along with theoretical training, students are offered a set of laboratory and practical courses that are held in specialised laboratories of the University and the Institute. Information and computer-aided technologies, the Internet and multimedia software are deeply embedded in learning. To name just a few: AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, KOMPAS, Allplan. The ANSYS, Lira, SCAD are intended for the design of building structures. The Institute also draws on the WinRIK software package to teach learners how to draw up a cost estimate. Software packages intended for future architects and designers are Maya, Cinema, CorelDRAW, 3dStudioMax. The above mentioned applications are also essential in the development of telelearning option.

Practical training

Summer time is the time for consolidation of theoretical knowledge during curricular practical trainings and on-the-job internships. On-the-job internships take place on the premises of leading construction organisations and design institutes located in the Republic of Mordovia. An excellent form helping not only to cement theoretical knowledge, but also build a labour camaraderie is the participation of learners in student construction detachments/brigades. This form of labour education has a deep-rooted tradition.

Research

Research is an integral part of academic process. The Institute boasts the state-of-the art research equipment. The Institute takes pride in several scientific schools, known not only in Mordovia, but also far beyond the borders of the Republic. The Institute scholars together with the Institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences are engaged in synthesis of materials that do not change their properties under various severe climatic conditions. Nation-wide conferences are regularly held at the Institute. The staff and students take an active part in specialised regional, federal and international exhibitions. The Institute has its own postgraduate school. There are currently 44 postgraduate students.
