Every year, students from around the world choose our university! Al-Khafaji Zain Al-abideen Asaad came to study at our university from Iraq — an ancient country in the Middle East with a rich historical heritage and diverse culture. Zain is training to become a doctor — one of the most noble, humane, and essential professions. Yaroslava Pangaeva interviewed him.
— Zain, why did you choose Mordovia State University among many other universities in Russia?
- A friend of mine had studied here before and recommended the university to me. He told me that the education is excellent, and that Saransk is a peaceful and comfortable city to live in. That was very important to me. Distance is no obstacle when it comes to education. When I arrived in Mordovia, there was no time to waste — I got straight to studying.
— How is your country different from ours?
- Iraq has a warmer climate, and we celebrate different holidays. One of the most important is Eid al-Fitr. On this day, we prepare traditional dishes such as dolma and baklava. Hospitality is deeply rooted in our culture — any guest is treated like a member of the family.
— What challenges did you face during your studies? Were you able to overcome them?
- At first, it was difficult to adapt to a different education system. In Russia, there are more assignments and a different approach to studying. Everything needs to be done on time and with responsibility. It was also challenging to adjust to the new climate and culture. Later, I learned to manage my time better, made friends, and began to understand how everything works.
You should never give up. Being open to new knowledge is very important to me. I am a future doctor, and that is a special mission. Healing and saving lives — that’s what the medical profession is all about.
— Do you have any hobbies?
- I love listening to music — it helps me concentrate. I’m also passionate about poetry and sometimes write my own poems. I enjoy cooking, especially traditional dishes from my country. In my free time, I read books and listen to podcasts, mostly about self-development. I also like playing board games and football, and I enjoy watching movies and TV series — especially dramas and science fiction.
— What advice would you give to our readers?
- Don’t be afraid of making mistakes — they’re a natural part of the learning process. It’s important to communicate with other students and university professors, and never hesitate to ask questions. Studying and getting involved in university life help you adapt more quickly. Respect the culture and traditions of all countries, and stay open to new experiences. Believe in yourself. Don’t give up on your dreams, and always keep a positive attitude.
