On October 1, Ogarev Mordovia State University celebrates its 95th anniversary — almost a century of education, scientific discovery, professional development and service to the region and the country. From its beginnings as a small agricultural and pedagogical institute to its development into a modern national research university, Ogarev MRSU has grown together with generations of students, teachers, researchers and graduates. Over the past 95 years, more than 190,000 people have graduated from the university.
The university’s history began on October 1, 1931, when an agricultural and pedagogical institute was established in Mordovia. A year later, it was transformed into a pedagogical institute. In 1957, the Mordovia State University was established on its basis with six faculties. In 1970, the university was named after the renowned Russian poet and publicist Nikolai Ogarev. The university continued to expand and develop throughout the following decades. In 2010, it received the status of a National Research University, and in 2021 it became a participant in the federal Priority 2030 strategic academic leadership programme.
Throughout its history, Ogarev MRSU has been home to prominent scholars whose work has contributed to Russian and international science and culture. Among them were literary scholar Mikhail Bakhtin, botanist Vladimir Rzhavitin, medical scientist Nikolai Atyasov, linguists and philologists Natalia Shvedova and Dmitry Tsygankin, and philosopher Alexander Sukharev. Their academic legacy remains an important part of the university’s identity and continues to attract researchers and students. Today, the university offers more than 300 educational programmes and brings together over 20,000 students, including almost 4,000 international students from 59 countries. Its academic community includes 794 Candidates of Sciences and 170 Doctors of Sciences, as well as four academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences The university’s graduates can be found across public administration, business, science, education, culture, healthcare, sport and many other fields.
Scientific research remains one of the university’s major priorities. Ogarev MRSU currently brings together 87 research laboratories and centres, as well as the Ogarev Startup Studio, which was ranked among the five best university startup studios in Russia in 2024. University researchers are working on projects ranging from biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including cancer, to artificial intelligence solutions for industry and technologies for automated plant cultivation.
Researchers from the University’s Institute of Medicine have also contributed to the development of clinical guidelines and clinical trials of four medicines, including Areplivir, which was subsequently included in the Russian State Register of Medicines. The university’s current priorities are closely connected with the challenges of tomorrow.
As Acting Rector Larisa Balykova noted, Ogarev MRSU continues to respond to the changing needs of society and the economy through its two strategic projects under Priority 2030: «Medicine of the Future: Innovative Pharmaceuticals, Bioengineering and Biomedicine» and «Modern Environments for the Transmission of Information and Energy.» The university is also focused on preparing specialists for the real economy and strengthening its contribution to the development of Mordovia and Russia.
International cooperation has become an important part of university life. In 2023, Ogarev MRSU opened a Centre for Indian Culture and a regional branch of the Society of Russian-Chinese Friendship. In 2026, another important step was taken with the launch of the Joint Educational Institute of Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, China, and Ogarev MRSU.
Today, thousands of international students from dozens of countries are part of the university community, bringing new cultures, languages and perspectives to campus life.
The university’s anniversary programme brings together representatives of education, science, business and government. Among the celebrations are the official session «95 Years of Development: Dialogue Between the University, Business and Government as the Foundation for Strategic Leadership,» the outdoor photo exhibition «People. Eras. Frames.», and a special anniversary event at the Yaushev State Opera and Ballet Theatre. A special anniversary issue of «Voice of Mordovia University», one of the oldest media outlets in the Republic of Mordovia, is also being published to mark the occasion.
For two days, September 30 and October 1, the mast of the television and radio centre in Saransk is illuminated in the university’s colours with the message «Ogarev MRSU — 95 Years.» The anniversary has also inspired the launch of «For Real», a university media project highlighting the young researchers who are shaping the future of Ogarev MRSU.
