Meet Emir Samuel Mena Vera: An International Student fr om Venezuela !
Faculty: Mathematics and Technology
Country: Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
Passionate about Mathematics & Technology Emir’s journey fr om Venezuela to Russia is fueled by his love for problem-solving and innovation. He chose to study here because of Russia’s reputation for excellence in these fields, particularly its deep-rooted history in mathematics and data science.
Q: Can you tell us about your academic background and what motivated you to choose this university for your studies in Russia?
A: My academic journey has always revolved around a deep passion for mathematics and technology. Growing up in Venezuela, I was fascinated by how technology could solve complex problems and improve society, with mathematics being the foundation for these innovations. Witnessing firsthand the transformative power of technology in my home country fueled my desire to further explore these fields. When choosing wh ere to pursue my studies, Russia stood out because of its strong reputation in mathematics, computer science, and technology. Russian universities are known for their contributions to global scientific advancements, and the program at my university is well-respected and aligned perfectly with my academic interests. It offers high-level research opportunities, a rigorous curriculum, and access to experienced professors, making it the ideal environment for my growth. In turn, the journey of a close person who inspired me and also chose to study in Russia has added a significant dimension to my motivation.
Q: How has your experience been in adapting to the educational environment here? Have you noticed any significant differences compared to your home country?
A: Adapting to the educational system here has been both a challenge and a rewarding experience. The Russian approach to education, particularly in fields like systems engineering and AI, is much more structured and theory-driven compared to the more practical, project-oriented style I was used to in Venezuela and Ecuador. Here, there’s a heavy emphasis on mathematical foundations and algorithmic precision, which has really expanded my understanding of the theoretical aspects of technology. The language barrier was one of the toughest obstacles. Although I had studied Russian before arriving and dedicated significant effort, thanks to an excellent language teacher in Kazan, grasping complex technical concepts in another language took time. However, this challenge motivated me to push beyond my limits, improving both my language and academic skills. The intense focus on theory here has helped me not only develop solutions but also understand the scientific reasoning behind them, which is something I’ve come to greatly appreciate.
Q: What has been your favorite aspect of studying at this university? What opportunities have you found most beneficial?
A: One of the best aspects of studying at this university is the access to cutting-edge research facilities and the chance to work closely with professors who are leaders in their fields. Being able to participate in several research projects has allowed me to dive deeper into the areas of technology and innovation that I’m passionate about. Additionally, the international student community here is incredibly diverse, which has enriched my academic experience. Interacting with peers fr om all over the world has broadened my perspectives, not only academically but also culturally. The university’s environment encourages collaboration and the sharing of ideas, which has been a major highlight of my time here.
Q: How have you engaged with the local culture outside of your studies? Have you participated in any university events or activities that promote cultural exchange?
A: I’ve made it a point to immerse myself in Russian culture outside of my studies. I’ve participated in a number of cultural exchange events organized by the university, wh ere international students can share their own traditions while learning about Russian customs. These events have been a great way to meet new people and understand the culture of the country wh ere I’m studying. In addition to that, I’ve enjoyed exploring the city, experiencing local art, food, and traditions. The university has also organized excursions to historical sites, which have helped me appreciate Russia’s rich history. Engaging in local festivals, visiting museums, and interacting with Russian classmates has deepened my understanding of the culture. Russia has a fascinating blend of scientific and artistic heritage, and experiencing this firsthand has added another dimension to my educational journey.
Q: What challenges have you faced as an international student in Russia, and how have you overcome them?
A: One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced has been adjusting to the educational system while learning to navigate the language barrier. Discussing complex technical subjects in Russian was intimidating at first, but it also motivated me to improve my language skills. Over time, with consistent effort, my Russian proficiency has improved significantly, especially in academic and technical settings. The climate was another challenge. Coming fr om Venezuela and Ecuador, I wasn’t used to the harsh Russian winters. However, with preparation and adapting to new habits, I’ve managed to not only cope with the cold but also appreciate the beauty of the snow and winter landscapes. These experiences have tested my resilience and helped me grow both personally and emotionally.
Q: Looking to the future, how do you think your experiences here will impact your aspirations or professional goals?
A: My time in Russia has certainly shaped my vision for the future. The technical expertise I’ve gained here, particularly in fields like mathematics, systems engineering, and AI, has given me the tools to address real-world challenges with innovative solutions. I aim to use this knowledge to make a meaningful impact on society, whether it’s through advanced research or the development of new technologies. Beyond the technical skills, my experience as an international student has provided me with a global perspective. Learning to adapt to different cultural and educational environments has broadened my outlook, and I’m confident this will be invaluable as I pursue international collaborations in the future. I see myself working on projects that tackle global challenges, particularly in areas wh ere technology can drive social, economic, and environmental progress. I’m excited to contribute to the technological innovations that will shape our world in the years to come.
