A team of Russian scientists has developed a groundbreaking microgel technology designed for targeted drug delivery to the kidneys, potentially transforming the treatment of chronic kidney diseases. This innovative approach aims to deliver medication directly to the affected organ, significantly reducing the risk of side effects and enhancing treatment effectiveness.
The research, conducted by experts from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Saratov State University, and the National Research Mordovia State University, focuses on a new type of microgel that transports drugs directly to kidney tissues. The results have been published in the scientific journal Optical Materials.
How the Technology Works
The microgel system uses tiny oil-filled microbeads, which are made from a blend of whey protein and linseed oil. The process results in an emulsion that separates into microbeads, each containing an oil core surrounded by a protein shell. These microbeads can carry medication inside or have it chemically attached to their surface.
When introduced into the body, the microgel naturally accumulates in the kidneys thanks to its unique physical and chemical properties. This precision allows the treatment to focus on the affected area, reducing the overall impact on other organs and minimizing potential side effects.
Promising Results from Animal Testing
Before moving to animal trials, the researchers tested the safety of the microgel on various cell cultures, including human embryonic kidney cells, stem cells, immune cells, and connective tissue cells. The tests confirmed that the microgel is non-toxic, even in high concentrations.
Following these results, the team conducted experiments on laboratory mice. The animals were divided into three groups: two received the microgel through different methods—intravenously and through arteries—while the third group served as a control and did not receive the treatment. The trials showed that the microgel efficiently targeted kidney tissues, suggesting significant potential for treating kidney diseases more effectively.
